What The Terms Mean

In modern heavy-duty trucks, J1939 diagnostic messages often use SPN and FMI pairs. The SPN identifies the parameter, while the FMI describes the failure mode. Source Address, or SA, can help identify which module reported the problem. See the SPN/FMI guide for a full explanation.

Older systems may use MID, PID, and SID terminology. See the glossary for plain-English definitions of these and other diagnostic terms. OEM tools may also display manufacturer-specific codes that map to SPN/FMI records differently by engine family, calibration, and model year.
