What It Means
A missing required data elements diagnostic event means that one or more mandatory fields in an ELD duty status or driving event record are absent. The ELD technical specification defines required data elements for each event type — duty status changes must include date, time, location, odometer, engine hours, driver identification, and several other fields. When any of these is unavailable at the time the record is created, the ELD logs this diagnostic event.
The most common triggers are incomplete driver login (the ELD created an event without driver ID assigned), a position fix that was unavailable at the moment of a duty status change, or a missing engine data value (odometer or engine hours) at the time the record was written.
What To Record
Note which event is flagged and which data element the device reports as missing. Some devices display the specific field name; others show a general indicator. Record the time of the event and the duty status change associated with it so the gap can be identified and reviewed.
What Drivers Should Do
Review the flagged event in the ELD interface. If the device allows annotation or manual correction for the missing field (for example, entering a manual location when GPS was unavailable), follow the device's correction procedure. Do not delete the event — annotation is the appropriate response for missing data in most ELD systems.
If missing data is recurring (for example, GPS position is consistently unavailable at certain locations), notify the carrier so the device's positioning system can be evaluated.
What Not To Do
Do not delete records with missing data elements to clean up the log. A deleted record creates a gap that is more problematic for compliance review than a record with a flagged missing field. Use the device's annotation and editing procedures to address missing data within the constraints of the regulatory guidelines.

FAQ
What data elements are required in an ELD event record?
The required data elements for ELD event records are defined in 49 CFR 395 Appendix A, Section 4. They include date, time (UTC-synced), location (latitude/longitude or nearest city/state), engine hours, vehicle miles, driver identification, co-driver identification if applicable, vehicle identification, and event type. The complete list is in the current version of the technical specification.
Can a missing required data element create a violation at roadside?
A missing required data element is a data quality issue, not automatically a Hours of Service violation. However, a roadside inspector reviewing a record with data diagnostic events for missing elements may scrutinize the records more carefully and may consider the completeness of the overall record when assessing compliance. The regulatory significance depends on which element is missing and whether it affects the inspector's ability to verify HOS compliance.
How long does the driver have to correct a missing data element?
The ELD technical specification and regulatory guidance define what edits are permissible and within what timeframe. Most edits to duty status records must be completed within the same day or within a short correction window. Consult your ELD provider's documentation and current FMCSA guidance for the specific editing rules applicable to your device and the regulatory provisions.
